How to Play the Dirty Diaper Chocolate Bar Game

The Dirty Diaper chocolate bar game is the version where guests identify chocolate that has been softened inside clean nappies. It works best as a short, clearly organised guessing game: prepare four to eight numbered nappies, keep an answer key, and give every guest the same amount of time to look and smell before recording their answers.

Dirty Diaper game at a glance

  • Best for: 6–30 guests.
  • Preparation: about 15 minutes.
  • Playing time: 10–15 minutes.
  • Recommended number: six nappies for a balanced round.
  • Winner: the guest or team with the most correct chocolate-bar guesses.

What you need

  • Four to eight clean disposable nappies.
  • The same number of different chocolate bars.
  • A microwave-safe plate and a separate spoon for each chocolate.
  • Number labels, an answer sheet and pens.
  • The original wrappers for the host's answer key and allergy information.
  • Kitchen roll, hand wipes and a covered bag for clearing up.
  • An optional small prize or tie-break question.

Chocolate ideas for an interesting round

Choose bars with different fillings and textures so guests have useful clues. A plain milk chocolate, wafer bar, caramel bar, biscuit bar, white chocolate and aerated chocolate make a more varied set than six similar bars. Avoid nut-containing chocolate unless you have checked guest allergies and can prevent contact between samples.

How to set up the game

  1. Make the answer key. Assign each chocolate a number from 1 to 6 before opening anything.
  2. Soften one bar at a time. Use short microwave bursts of around 10 seconds, checking between each burst. The chocolate should be soft rather than hot or runny.
  3. Use separate utensils. Transfer each chocolate with its own spoon to reduce cross-contact and stop flavours mixing.
  4. Prepare the nappies. Put one chocolate in the centre of each clean nappy and fasten or fold it loosely.
  5. Label clearly. Place a large number on the outside and arrange the nappies in numerical order.
  6. Prepare answer sheets. Give guests one numbered line per nappy plus space for a tie-break answer.
  7. Keep the key private. Put the wrappers and numbered answer list somewhere guests cannot see them.

Rules to read to guests

  1. Pass each numbered nappy around the table or invite one table at a time to the game station.
  2. Guests may look and smell, but nobody should taste the chocolate.
  3. Allow around 30 seconds per nappy before moving to the next number.
  4. Each guest writes one chocolate-bar name for every number.
  5. Reveal the answers only after every sheet has been collected.

Scoring and a simple tie-break

A correct brand and bar earns one point. If you want a slightly easier game, award half a point for identifying the main type, such as caramel or wafer. For a tie-break, ask guests to estimate the combined weight of the six unopened bars before preparation; the closest answer wins.

Hygiene, allergy and accessibility notes

  • Use only clean nappies, clean equipment and chocolate that is within date.
  • Keep wrappers so allergens can be checked, and clearly identify any milk, gluten, soya or nut risk.
  • Do not invite guests to taste from shared nappies or utensils.
  • Offer a visual-only option for guests who are sensitive to smells or uncomfortable handling the nappies.
  • Let guests work in pairs if reading small labels, writing or passing items is difficult.
  • Keep softened chocolate away from children and pets while the station is unattended.

Easy variations

  • Quick round: use four very different chocolates and finish in under ten minutes.
  • Team tables: give each table one answer sheet so guests can discuss the clues.
  • Low-mess version: put each softened chocolate in a small lidded sample pot placed inside the open nappy.
  • Photo round: photograph the prepared nappies and show the numbered pictures if passing items around is impractical.

Common setup mistakes

  • Using too much chocolate, which makes nappies leak and slows the game.
  • Heating bars until they are hot rather than merely softened.
  • Choosing several bars with almost identical fillings.
  • Forgetting to number the wrappers and write the answer key first.
  • Running the game without a clear no-tasting rule.
